Patriarch Daniel of Romania

Daniel Ciobotea, born Dan Ilie Ciobotea, ( born July 22, 1951 in dobresti, Bara, Timiş county ) is the sixth Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Life

Training

Dan Ilie Ciobotea was born as the third child of Alexie and Stela Ciobotea. He attended 1958-1962 primary school in his home village dobresti and 1962-1966 high school in Lăpuşnic, Timiş county. In 1966 he was taken after successful completion of the entrance examination into the municipal gymnasium of Buziaş and put his school in 1970 at the " Coriolanus Brediceanu " - high school in the city of Lugoj from. After school he attended from 1970 to 1974, the Theological Institute of Sibiu, where he graduated with a licentiate New Testament in the tray. After he received his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology at the Theological Institute in Bucharest, including Dumitru at Stăniloae. The continuation of his studies led him for two years on the faculty of the University of Strasbourg and the Albert -Ludwigs- University of Freiburg Protestant Theology. He was finally on 15 June 1979 in Strasbourg to Dr. theol. doctorate. The title of his dissertation was: Réflexion et vie chrétiennes aujourd'hui. Essai sur le rapport entre la théologie et la spiritualité, VII ^ 424 p. The work was supervised by Professors Gerard Siegwald and André Benoit. A year later, an extended version of this work at the Theological Faculty of the University of Bucharest was filed to obtain the title of Doctor. After the public defense of the dissertation on October 30, 1980, he also received a doctorate from an orthodox faculty.

Ecclesiastical career

On 6 August 1987, he entered the monastery Sihastria. He received by Archimandrite Ilie Cleopa, his monk spade, the name of Daniel. He was consecrated on August 8, 1987 Deacon and on August 15, 1987 Hieromonk. In October 1988 he was awarded the rank of Protosingels. Between September 1, 1988 and 1 March 1990, he was Patriarchalberater and also the director of the section "Present Theology and Ecumenical Dialogue ". At the same time he taught at the Theological Institute of Bucharest University as a professor at the Institute for Christian missiology.

In January 1990 Ciobotea became president of the reflection circle for the renewal of the Church. Here he worked with the Archimandrite Bartolomeu Anania, the pastors Prof. Constantin Galeriu and Prof. Dumitru Stăniloae and with lay representatives. The reflection circle is the full reintegration of religious instruction as a normal subject at all Romanian schools to the target.

On March 1, 1990, Daniel Ciobotea of Nicolae Corneanu, Metropolitan of Banat, proposed as auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Timisoara. After the election, by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, he was ordained on March 4, 1990 in the Cathedral of Timisoara entitled Lugojanul (from Lugoj ) bishop.

Archbishop of Iaşi and Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina

On 7 June 1990 he was elected as Archbishop of Iaşi and Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bukovina. On July 1, he took possession of the diocese, which had been vacant since 1986.

Since 1992, Metropolitan Daniel taught dogmatic theology and pastoral theology at the Faculty of the University of Iaşi orthodox theology. As Metropolitan, he also takes part in several ecumenical conferences: so he led the delegation of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the General Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Canberra ( 1992). He is also a representative of the national- Synodal Commission for Religious Education ( Bucharest ), President of the Commission for Liturgy and theology of the Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church (the former Education Commission), a founding member of the National Commission of Historical Monuments, member of the Central and Executive Committee of the WCC (1991-1998), member of the Presidium and the Central Committee of the Conference of European churches (CEC ) (since 1990) and Vice President of the 11th Assembly of CEC (Graz 1997). His intense commitment to ecumenism has entered him in conservative circles of the Orthodox Church and of monasticism sharp criticism.

In 1998 he founded the radio station Trinitas in Iasi.

Scientific activity

After completing his doctorate Ciobotea led as part of a lectureship at the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey, Switzerland where he was between 1986 and 1988 Director of Studies, his research further. In parallel to these activities, he also taught at the Universities of Fribourg and Geneva. Since 1992 Ciobotea taught dogmatic theology and pastoral theology at the Faculty of the University of Iaşi orthodox theology.

Ciobotea has published according to his assembled by the Romanian Patriarchate CV over 876 studies, articles, and speeches in Romanian and over 100 essays and studies in English, French and German in journals and anthologies. He is the author of several relevant theological monographs. In addition, he participated in over 200 theological symposia, congresses and conferences.

September 30, 2007 Ciobotea received by the Romanian President Traian Basescu the National Order " Steaua României " ( The Star of Romania ) in the grade of Grand Cross.

Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church

At the Synod to elect a successor for the late Patriarch Teoctist I., the choice fell on 12 September 2007 at Ciobotea.

The inauguration took place on 30 September 2007 in Patriarchal Cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helena in Bucharest.

Immediately after his inauguration, he founded an intended solely for ecclesiastical use Media Trust, which was officially inaugurated on October 27, 2007.
