Patrick Browne

Patrick Browne (* 1720, † 1790) was a native of the County Mayo Irish physician and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " P.Browne ".

Patrick Browne lived with relatives from 1737 to Antigua, but returned for health reasons back to Europe. He studied natural sciences, particularly botany at the University of Paris, then went to Leyden in 1747 and Doctor of Medicine. He knew the botanist Frederik Gronovius January and corresponded with Linnaeus. He practiced for two years as a doctor at St Thomas' Hospital in London, before returning to the West Indies and settled in Jamaica. Among others, in 1756 he published the work The Civil and Natural History of Jamaica, were introduced in the name of 104 genera. 1771 he returned to Ireland in the County Mayo.
