Paul Amman

Paul Ammann ( born August 31, 1634 Breslau, † February 4, 1691 in Leipzig) was a German physician and botanist.

Life and work

Ammann studied medicine at the University of Leipzig, before he traveled to the Netherlands and England. After his return he became in 1672 a doctorate in Leipzig for Dr. med. In 1674 he became professor of botany and finally in 1682 for physiology in Leipzig. Since 1664 he was a member of the Scholars Academy Leopoldina.

Ammann was the Director of the Botanical Garden of the University of Leipzig, who was in his time as the most beautiful in Germany. In addition, he also participated in the organizational tasks of the Leipzig Academy and was in the winter semester of 1668, in 1684 rector of the Alma Mater.

Among his writings the flora of Leipzig is particularly worth mentioning that in 1675 under the title Supellex Botanica, hoc est: Enumeratio Plantarum, Quae non solum in Horto Medico Academiae Lipsiensis, sedetiam in aliis about Urbem Viridariis, Pratis ac Sylvis & c. progerminare solent: cui Brevis AccessIT ad Materiam Medicam in usum Philiatrorum Manuductio appeared.

Ehrentaxon

William Houstoun named in his honor, the genus of the plant family Lythraceae Ammannia ( Lythraceae ). Linnaeus later took the name.
