Paul de Sorbait

Paul Sorbait (* 1624 in Montblyart, Belgium, † April 29, 1691 in Vienna, St. Stephen ) was a doctor.

Life and work

Paul Sorbait was from 1654 professor of medicine at the University of Vienna, 1668 Rector. He was personal physician to the Dowager Empress Eleonore. An early detection of the plague Sorbait avoided a major epidemic. A particular concern was him botany and anatomy, and he founded the first medical library at the university. From 1679 he was Grand Inquisitor in Pestangelegenheiten.

In 1894 in Vienna, Rudolf -Fuenfhaus ( 15th district ) was named the Sorbaitgasse after him.
