Paul Felix Schmidt

Paul Felix Schmidt (born 7 Augustjul / August 20 1916greg in Narva ( Narva today ). . † August 11, 1984 in Allentown (Pennsylvania) ) was a deutschbaltischer chess master.

Schmidt was the son of a Baltic German ophthalmologist. He learned chess at an early stage and was already in his youth as one of the best players in Estonia. In 1935, he won an international tournament in Tallinn ( Reval German ). In 1936, he played a match against Paul Keres in Pärnu draw 3,5:3,5 ( 3, -3, = 1). In 1937 he won in Pärnu ahead of Paul Keres, Salo Flohr and Gideon Ståhlberg. In the same year he played in the Chess Olympiad 1937 in Stockholm to Estonia on the second board ( behind Keres ), at the Chess Olympiad 1939 in Buenos Aires, he won bronze with Estonia.

The end of 1939 the family moved into the German-occupied Reichsgau Warta country. Schmidt, who was domiciled in Bromberg, first studied in Gdansk, then in Heidelberg Chemistry, where he also received his doctorate. Schmidt participated in various tournaments in Germany and the occupied territories during the war, in part: In 1940 he was second in the German Championship in Bad Oeynhausen, 1941 ( also in Bad Oeynhausen ) he got together with Klaus boy on the first place and defeated him in the subsequent playoff. In the same year he won together with Alexander Alekhine the tournament from Krakow / Warsaw. In 1943 he was third in Salzburg and second in the Greater German Championship in Vienna.

After the war, Schmidt was first second behind Efim Bogolyubov in Kassel in 1947, and later shared second place ( with Tjeerd van Scheltinga ) behind Savielly Tartakower in Hastings 1948/49, but it was his chess career in 1950 already over. He recently took on the German Championships in Bad Pyrmont, 1949 ( 3rd - 5th place) and 1950 (9th - 10th place) part and then decided to move to the United States. He lived and worked as a chemist in Philadelphia. His best historical Elo rating was 2696th This he achieved in December 1943.

In 1950 he was appointed by the World Chess Federation FIDE International Master for.
