Paul Himmel

Paul Himmel (* April 1914 in New Haven ( Connecticut ), † February 8, 2009 ) is one of the major photographers from the early era of American photography. His focus was on fashion photography and documentary photography.

Life and work

1923 Lillian Bassman sky met Paul, whom he married in 1935. 1931 sky began self-taught in photography. First, however, he went on to graduate. After studying natural sciences and biology, he took up teaching at the Benjamin Franklin High School in East Harlem. In the summer of 1945, he started as a photographer assistant to work in the New York Vogue Studios and ended up teaching for the time being. In the same year he began to work professionally. First orders as a fashion photographer, he received from Vogue, Harper 's Bazaar and other magazines later.

His work is characterized by large experimentation. Paul Himmel always exploring new shooting techniques, exceeding the previously known rules and boundaries of photography. He experimented mainly with slow shutter speeds and motion. His recordings from the New York City Ballet, created in the 1950s, does not stop the motion in still images fixed ( "frozen" movement ), but in movement studies. Paul Himmel developed his photography so much to the art photography that he could find no commercial contracting more and ended his photographic career in 1969. Afterwards he worked as a psychotherapist.
