Paul Hugh Emmett

Paul Hugh Emmett ( born September 22, 1900 in Portland ( Oregon), † 22 April 1985 ) was an American physical chemist. His research focused on the surface science and catalysis research. He was college friend of Linus Pauling and married his third wife in 1976 Pauling sister Pauline.

After his BA degree at Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) joined Paul Emmett to the California Institute of Technology, where he received his doctorate. In 1937 he became a member of the Chemical Engineering Department at Johns Hopkins University. In 1943 he left this University and was an employee at the Manhattan Project in the field of isotope separation (separation of 235U and 238U ). After completing this work, he transferred to the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, and finally, in 1955, again at the Johns Hopkins University. In this year he also became a member of the National Academy of Sciences. After his retirement in 1971 he was awarded a Research Professor Portland State University, which he held until his death.

Since 1971, the North American Catalysis Society ( NACS ) gives the Paul H. Emmett Award in Fundamental Catalysis.

His work has ranged over a wide field of physical chemistry, in particular the study of the mechanisms of catalysis and isotope research. Together with Stephen Brunauer and Edward Teller, he developed the BET measurement for determining the size of surfaces using gas adsorption.
