Paul Katz

Paul Katz is an American cellist and music teacher.

Katz was a student of Gregor Piatigorsky, Janos Starker, Bernard Greenhouse, Leonard Rose and Gabor Rejtő. In 1962 he took part in master classes with Pablo Casals in Berkeley. He won competitions in Munich and Geneva and took three times to Rudolf Serkin's Marlboro Music Festival part. From 1969 to 1995 he was a member of the Cleveland Quartet, with which he gave more than 2,500 concerts and over 70 recordings, among others grossed at RCA Victor, Telarc International, Sony, Philips and Pro Arte. He was awarded two Grammy Awards and was nominated eleven times for the price. His recordings of the Cello Sonata by Ernst von Dohnányi with pianist Barry Snyder and the String Quintet by Franz Schubert with the Cleveland Quartet and Yo Yo Ma are considered to be outstanding.

Besides hundreds of master classes Katz gave summer courses, among others at the Aspen Festival, Yale Summer School of Chamber Music, the Perlman Music Program, the Schleswig -Holstein Music Festival, the Banff Centre for the Arts and at the Steans Institute of The Ravinia Festival. He taught twenty years at the Eastman School of Music, then at Rice University in Houston and from 2001 at the New England Conservatory. The American String Teachers Association awarded him as Artist Teacher 2003. For his lifelong commitment to chamber music, he received the Richard M. Bogomolny National Service Award. The Eva Janzer Memorial Cello Center at Indiana University honored him as a Chevalier du cellos. 2011 Katz founded the Internet portal for Cellists Cello Bello.
