Paul Kray

Paul Freiherr Kray of Krajowa ( born February 5, 1735 in Kesmark; † January 19, 1804 in Pest ) was an Austrian field -marshal.

Life

Kray came in 1754 in the Austrian army one, got up early to major and threw 1784 in Transylvania the revolt of the Vlachs down. In the war against the Turks, he distinguished himself at Porcseny and the volcano through. He was then in 1790, Major General and commanded the vanguard of the army in 1793 in the Netherlands. 1796 suggested Kray at Wetzlar, the French under Jean -Baptiste Kléber and contributed much to the victories at Amberg and Würzburg with. He struggled in 1797 with little luck in casting and ahead of Frankfurt am Main, in the Battle of Neuwied, he led a desperate defensive battle against an overwhelmingly superior force. In 1799 he took over the command of the troops in Italy, where he defeated the French army under Scherer at Verona, Legnano and Magnano and later conquered Mantua.

Kray was promoted to field -marshal and contributed significantly to the still fought at Novi and successes in Fossano. In Germany, where he in 1800 by the Archduke Charles took over the supreme command, however, he fought unhappy. The French success at the Battle of Blenheim caused him to withdraw his army towards the Inn. The conclusion of the truce in Parsdorf on July 15, quit his military career.

Paul Kray of Krajowa died on January 19, 1804 in Pest ( Budapest).

Reception

By the imperial resolution of Franz Joseph I of 28 February 1863 Paul Kray of Krajowa " famous, to the everlasting emulation worthy warlords and generals of Austria" in the list of added, in whose honor and remembrance also a life-size statue in the Feldherrenhalle of then newly built kk Hofwaffenmuseums (now the Military History Museum Vienna) was built. The statue was created in 1868 by sculptor Nicholas Vay ( 1828-1886 ) in Carrara marble, it was dedicated by Emperor Franz Joseph himself

Since 1888, the Austrian Infantry Regiment No. 67 bore his name.

In 1913 ( 22nd District ) was named after him in the Kraygasse Vienna Danube city.
