Paul & Paula

Paul & Paula was an American singing duo. The group became known for their first title Hey Paula, which reached No. 1 on the 1963 U.S. Billboard charts.

History

The duo consisted of Ray Hildebrand ( born December 21, 1940 in Joshua, Texas) and Jill Jackson ( born May 20, 1942 in McCamey, Texas), who studied together at the Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas. Both followed in the fall of 1962, a call to a local radio station, in favor of the American Cancer Society to appear before the microphone and sing a song. They opted for the duet Hey Paula, which Hildebrand had written in 1962.

The title was first brought out shortly thereafter by LECAM Records as a single, the duo was called at the time nor Jill and Ray. Mercury Records became aware of the duo and brought the single out in its subsidiary Philips Records. The name of the duo changed the record label titled Hey Paula Paul & Paula in accordance. Hey Paula was the biggest success of the duo: The single stayed in February 1963 for three weeks at # 1 on the Billboard Charts ( Pop Singles ) and managed just as the entry into the R & B singles chart. The follow-up single Young Lovers reached number 6 in the charts, while the third single First Quarrel only came in at number 27. In 1965 the duo parted.

Hildebrand and Jackson turned to solo projects. Hildebrand was working as a songwriter and producer, and formed with singer Paul country in the 1980s, the duo Land & Hildebrand, which occurred mainly with gospel music and albums recorded. Jackson began a solo career as a singer, but was unable to repeat earlier successes of the duo.
