Paul Thymich

Paul Thymich or Thiemich ( born June 17, 1656 in Big Grove, † 1694 in Leipzig ) was a German poet.

Life

Paul Thymich studied at the St. Thomas School. He studied at the University of Leipzig. From 1681 to 1694 he was a teacher of St. Thomas School in Leipzig. He emerged as a poet of sacred and secular songs as well as librettist of the Leipzig Opera and the Weissenfels court. He wrote the elfstrophigen text " Come, Jesus, come " for a set to music by Thomas cantor Johann Schelle Begräbnismotette for the funeral of Thomas school rector Jacob Thomasius (died on September 9, 1684). Their 1st and 11th verse grabbed Johann Sebastian Bach on later in the composition of his own eponymous Trauermotette, which, together with its sibling works the culmination of Western vocal polyphony. Thymichs text follows closely the Bible text of John's Gospel in chapter 14.6: "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me. "
