Paul Zimmermann (blacksmith)

Paul Carpenter ( born January 26, 1939 in Pliezhausen, Baden- Württemberg ) is a German blacksmith and metal sculptor with numerous contemporary works. He is considered one of the first German ironwork for innovative and modern forms in traditional blacksmithing. Zimmermann wears the British title AWCD the first nichtgebürtiger British blacksmith.

Life and career

Paul Zimmermann was born in 1939 in Pliezhausen in the state of Baden -Württemberg. His parents worked at the beginning of World War II as farmers. Zimmermann started in 1953 as a traditional education locksmith, which ended in 1956. After his training, he won an award for gifted students and worked for a time in Switzerland. Among other things, he was a student of Hajo Pentecost. From 1962 to 1963 he attended the Luis school in Munich. During this time he taught also at the Vocational Teacher Training Institute. In 1963, he lodged with the Munich Chamber of Crafts from the master craftsman.

In 1963, Paul Zimmermann his own workshop as a studio carpenter in Pliezhausen. During his active working he also lectured at several prestigious international art forging meetings.

Zimmermann won several national and international awards. His work has been shown in exhibitions in Germany, England, Finland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Slovenia, Russia, USA and Canada. (English)

Is permanently displayed the work of Paul Zimmermann Würth Museum in Künzelsau, the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis and in the Museum of Sepulchral Culture in Kassel.

Works

Earlier in his career, Paul Zimmermann focused on architectural blacksmithing. But Zimmermann soon realized the need for innovative, contemporary design involve in the traditional craft to keep this art form alive and well in the future. He describes the philosophy of its design, often with the phrase: Form is restriction - Design is revelation (Shape is limitation - design is disclosure ). Today Zimmermann is known primarily for his sculptural grave character.

Paul Zimmermann is still active even after his retirement. Many apprentices and trainees from New Zealand, Japan, USA, Canada and throughout Europe have studied his philosophy and his skills with him and carried on. Zimmermann is a member of the expert group metal designer Baden- Württemberg and the Association of Artists.

Work have, among other ex- President Richard von Weizsäcker, former Chancellor Helmut Kohl or actress Ruth Maria Kubitschek.

Paul carpenter's son is the blacksmith Heiner Zimmermann. He is a professor at the University of Gothenburg.
