Paulo Dias de Novais

Paulo Dias de Novais (* 1510, † May 9, 1589, Massangano, Angola ) was a Fidalgo of the court and Portuguese explorers in Africa of the 16th century and the first captain - governor of Angola. He was the grandson of the explorer Bartolomeu Diaz.

Novais received by King Sebastian I 1571 a deed of gift ( Carta de Doação ), the title Governador e Capitão -Mor, conquistador e povoador do Reyno de Sebaste na da Conquista Etiópia ou Guiné Inferior awarded him. He sailed from Lisbon on October 23, 1574 and landed at the Ilhas de Cabras at Luanda in Angola today on 11 February 1575th Attracted by the prospect of the famous silver mines of Cambambe, he established a settlement in São Paulo, near the Ilha do Cabo.

He died unmarried as the last male descendant of Bartolomeu Diaz. He was initially buried in Massangano. His remains were transferred in 1609 to Luanda and buried in the local Jesuit church.
