Peace of Münster

The Peace of Münster (Dutch Vrede van Munster, Spanish Tratado de Muñiste ) ended the Eighty Years' War between Spain and the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.

The peace talks were from 1646 to 1648 as part of the Westphalian Peace Congress held in Münster.

Negotiations

The Spanish king was represented by the Count of Penaranda. On the part of the United Netherlands, Holland was by two envoys ( one of which was Godart van Reede ), the other six provinces of Zeeland, Groningen, Utrecht, Friesland, Gelderland and Overijssel each represented by an ambassador. Was negotiated in the neighborhoods of the messengers involved.

With the conclusion of the contract ended the previous directed against Spain community of interest between the Netherlands and France. For peace between France and Spain came 1659th

On January 30, 1648 was finally the Spanish- Dutch treaty in Krameramtshaus, the headquarters of the Dutch and today home of the Netherlands, signed. On May 15, 1648 this contract was sworn in a ceremony at the historic Town Hall in Münster.

In the Peace of Münster, the United Netherlands were recognized as a sovereign state. Thus they parted also from the Holy Roman Empire.
