Geology

Peak Hill is part of the Jurassic Coast. Occur on the coast side of the Peak Hill three rock layers to light: The Mercia mudstones form with deposits of various mudstones, siltstones and sandstones of the base of the cliff. They formed 200 million years ago in the hot and dry climate of the Triassic.

Above the Triassic formations are layers of Upper Greensand, a rock formation from the Cretaceous period, which were formed about 80 million years.

Beneath the surface of Peak Hill is a layer of flint gravel. This layer is possibly the remnant of a defunct chalk layer of the early Tertiary in front of about 60 to 65 million years ago.
