Peary (crater)

85.15

The lunar crater Peary is a 85 km large Wall level near the North Pole of the Moon.

Peary touched with its crater rim the North Pole, making it the closest to the pole structure. Like its southern neighbor Byrd and Hermite in the West he is by libration only temporarily visible from Earth at the very edge. His high-lying edges and some heights in the area are always in sunlight and - as on the lunar South Pole - called " mountains of eternal light ."

In the past few years pursued plans for a permanent lunar observatory Peary is therefore considered as a possible location into consideration, but also the region of the crater Shackleton near the South Pole. In the area of both lunar poles 1996 tracks were first located by water ice, which would be a plus for a permanent lunar station next to the favorable astronomical observing conditions.
