Pectinidae

Scallops

The scallops ( Pectinidae ) are a family of the order Pectinoida within the mussels ( Bivalvia ).

Description

The two flaps of the case have wing-shaped appendages on the right and left of the vortex. You only have a large sphincter ( " anisomyar " ) and, consequently, only a sphincter impression.

A striking feature of scallops are its numerous eyes on the mantle margin. That's why they have a correspondingly developed nervous system with a concentration of ganglia in the visceral area.

Economic Importance

Some species have great economic importance. Be eaten sphincter and gonads of mussels ( see also scallop ).

Significance in the symbolism

The Group uses a stylized scallop shell with downward vortex as a company logo. Also in heraldry is the scallop, scallop always performing, as an emblem before. It is the pilgrim character par excellence.
