Pedernales is the headquarters of the district ( municipality ) Pedernales, Delta State Amacuro, Venezuela. The village is located on the Pedernales channel, part of the Orinoco Delta, not far from the Atlantic Ocean.

History

Pedernales was founded in 1858. It was the capital of the state of Delta Amacuro 1884 to 1888, when it was replaced by Tucupita.

The Standard Oil Company began with the first oil production in the region in 1931. Foreign companies have the oil to 1964 promoted. Since the oil of the region contains a lot of sulfur, the promotion was then abandoned. The Venezuelan oil company PDVSA began in 1980 again the region for oil production to investigate.

Economy and Transport

Pedernales is located on one of the many islands of the Orinoco Delta and is not accessible by car. The village has a harbor and a small airport. Nearby crude oil is produced. The population lives off of oil production and fisheries.
