Pedro Coronel

Pedro Coronel Arroyo ( born March 25, 1923 in Zacatecas, † 23 May 1985 in Mexico City) was a Mexican painter, draftsman, printmaker and sculptor.

Life and work

Coronel, son of Pedro Melesio Coronel and his wife Juana Arroyo Luna, went to primary education at the Instituto de Ciencias to Mexico City, where he 1940-1945 painting and sculpture at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado " La Esmeralda" studied. During his stay in Paris from 1946 to 1948, he worked at Victor Brauner and Brâncuşi Constantin. In 1950 he traveled through Belgium, France, Spain and North Africa, and in 1954 in the " Galería Proteo " in Mexico City, his first solo exhibition. This was followed by exhibitions in France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Japan, the United States and in Brazil. In the II Bienal Interamericana de México, he was in 1959 awarded the Premio Nacional de Pintura " José Clemente Orozco ." In 1960 he exhibited at the Galería de Arte Mexicano in the Palacio de Bellas Artes and 1965. In 1966 he was awarded the prize of the Salón de Pintura and 1984 with the national art award, the Premio Nacional de Artes, excellent.

Coronel died in 1985 at the Hospital Humana as a result of a stroke. His body was first buried in the Panteon Francés de San Joaquin and transferred a year later to his hometown. There, now bears his name is a museum in the former Santo Domingo convent and a road. His birthplace is in today's Calle Allende of Zacatecas.

He was the brother of the artist Rafael Coronel Arroyo.
