Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal

Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal (* September 23, 1924, † 10 January 1978) was the editor of La Prensa, the only influential Nicaraguan opposition newspaper under the Somoza dictatorship.

Chamorro Violeta Barrios de Chamorro was with, who later became President of Nicaragua (1990-1996), married.

Back in 1959 started bourgeois forces of the Conservative Party in the guerrilla of Olama and Molle Jones Chamorros under the leadership of Costa Rica from an armed invasion attempt against the Somoza dictatorship, but failed. The company was logistically supported by the Costa Rican politician José Figueres Ferrer. He was also from 1975 to his death chairman of the opposition Udel ( Unión Democrática de Liberación, " Democratic Union of Liberation " ) and was considered for the U.S. President Jimmy Carter as a possible successor of Anastasio Somoza Debayle.

La Prensa has never been prohibited during the Somoza dictatorship or fully closed, Chamorro was repeatedly imprisoned for reporting unwelcome. During the Sandinista uprising Chamorro was probably murdered the son of the dictator, Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero, 1978 command. 50,000 Nicaraguans attended his funeral.
