Peeter Vähi

Peeter Vähi ( born May 18, 1955 in Tartu, Estonia) is an Estonian composer.

During his studies he became interested in both the music of the Baroque as well as for electronic and oriental music. His studies at the Estonian Academy of Music (focus composition) in Tallinn, he completed in 1980.

Since graduating Peeter Vähi wrote music programs for radio and Estonia freelance produces records; he was also a music producer at Estonian state concert institute and artistic director of several international music festivals: the Festival of Oriental Music "Orient", the festival " Glass Bead Game", the Arvo Pärt Festival and the Estonian culture festivals in Germany. He is a board member of the Estonian Composers' Union and the Estonian Buddhist Society and a member of the Estonian academic Orientalists society.

Characteristics of the music Vähis are a generous stylistic versatility, simple but yet interesting sounds, skillful application of exotic musical instruments and electronic devices as well as a wealth of moods, ranging from the philosophical and thoughtful to the severity of the Baroque movement. His most notable works are the "White Concert " for guitar and orchestra " Fata Morgana " for piano ( published by Eres Edition ) "Four Views from the old Reval " for chamber ensemble ( published by Eres Edition ), Concerto for two chamber orchestras, " sounds silver moon ", " the way to the heart of Asia " ( cooperation with Asian musicians ) and the " Concerto Piccolo " for harpsichord and chamber orchestra. Since 1992 recordings of Vähis compositions on 50 CDs have been released for the following companies: Eres, ERP, Antes Edition Classics, earth tone, EMI, Euro Media, Warner Classics, Finlandia Records and Forte.
