Peggys Cove, Nova Scotia

Peggy 's Cove was founded in 1811 as a small town on the east coast of the St. Margaret's Bay in Nova Scotia. Since 1995, Peggy 's Cove is one with about 650 inhabitants of the territory of the Halifax Regional Municipality ( HRM).

Tourism

Peggy 's Cove is one of the major tourist attractions in Nova Scotia and is the main attraction of Lighthouse Trails. The famous lighthouse marks the eastern part of the village of St. Margarets Bay.

Since the Second World War tourism is the main source of income of the village. Despite the dominance of tourism the town has not lost its rustic charm of a fishing village. Even today, its residents fishing for lobster. In order to preserve the originality of the village, the local government and the provincial government has enacted strict rules for the construction and the influx of new residents.

Peggy 's Cove has a classic red - white lighthouse, the Lighthouse Peggy 's Point, which is no longer in active service with the Canadian Coast Guard. The lighthouse is one of the most photographed buildings in the Atlantic side of Canada and one of the most perceived lighthouses in the world. At the lighthouse was a small office of the Canadian post office where visitors could send postcards with a special stamp.

Swissair Flight 111

One of the memorials of the plane crash of Swissair Flight 111 is located about 1 km north- west of the village, called The Whaleback. On September 2, 1998, Swissair crashed into the St. Margaret's Bay. When the disaster came all 215 passengers and 14 crew members died. A second memorial is located in Bayswater, on the opposite side of the bay.
