Peist

Peist was until December 31, 2012, a municipality in the district Schanfigg, District Plessur in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

On January 1, 2013, it merged with the municipalities Calfreisen, Castiel, Long Meadow, Lüen, Molinis and St. Peter- Pagig to the municipality Arosa.

Geography

Peist is 11 km (air line) east of Churchill on the northern side of the Schanfiggs. The greater part of the former municipal district extends the right of the Plessur from around 1,100 m above sea level. M. with the river running through the rugged ravines of several slope to the Hochwangkette which forms between Cunggel ( 2,413 m ) and Mattjisch Horn ( 2461 m, the highest point in the former rural community ), the northern boundary. On the opposite side of the valley Peister spell included the rising up to 1900 m above the Enthalbwald and subsequent Alp Prätsch with the two Prätschseen and the so-called Guisanplatz. In addition to the village street Peist (1340 m), about 250 m situated on a sunny slope back right above the Plessur and 100 m above the railway line from Chur to Arosa, were part of the former municipality of the (partly used as mountain pastures ) Foreign settlements Barguns, Chegelboden and Tarnatel. The former also belonging to Peist Hof Maran is since 1911 part of the municipality of Arosa.

Neighboring communities were St. Peter- Pagig, Furna, Jenaz Fideris, Long Meadow, Arosa and Molinis.

Coat of arms

Blazon: Azure, golden pile, covered with blue rising arrow.

Modeled after the old Talschaftsfahne. The stake has been added to distinguish the arms from the county coat of arms.

Economy

The main economic activities are agriculture and handicrafts. In the village, a construction company, a sawmill and two Joinery are located. Tourism plays in Peist, which is attributable to the St. Peter / Hochwang region, a smaller role.

Traffic

By Peist the Schanfiggerstrasse runs. The former municipality is also connected to the public transport network by 1914 opened Arosa line of the Rhaetian Railway and, since 1 April 1981 with the Postbus Chur- Peist. With the commissioning of the railway and the Peist station was inaugurated.

Attractions

Monumental is the Protestant church. The Rufanatöbeli east of the color ravine is known for its peculiar sandy erosion formations ( " Steimannli "). In September 2012, the Civil Engineering Department of Grisons decided against the initial resistance of the Grisons environmental organizations the complete ablation of the largest local Steimannlis because the boulder on top of which is a threat to the underlying Schanfiggerstrasse.

At the station stands one of the oldest ash in Europe.
