Peleng

Peleng is an island off the east coast of Sulawesi in Indonesia.

It is the largest island in the Banggai Islands, lying between the Banda Sea and the Molukkensee. From Sulawesi to the north and west it is separated by the 12 km wide Strait of Peleng ( Peleng Selat ). In the southwest, about one kilometer away, is the smaller neighboring island of Banggai. In the north the coast is preceded by the even smaller island Bakalan, in the south are about 15 kilometers and 20 kilometers from Labobo Bangkulu. Next to the southeast other small islands are scattered.

The over 2350 km ² large island is heavily wooded and reaches a height of 1052 meters above the sea. It extends in a very characteristic shape in west-east direction: three main parts are adjacent, each western and central part and central and eastern part are connected to a two- and five -mile-wide isthmus.

Peleng belongs to the province of Sulawesi Tengah and is divided into five districts ( Kecamatan ) organized, from west to east, with capitals in parentheses: Buko ( Tataba ) Bulagi ( Bulagi ), Liang ( Liang ), Tinangkung ( Salakan ) and Totikum ( Sambiut ). The most important places in the district are Basiano Buko on the west coast and in the district Bonganang Tinangkung.

The inhabitants live off the coconut and potato cultivation and fishing.
