Pelite

Pelitic (Greek: pelos - clay, mud ) ( corresponds largely to the mudstone ) is the name given to fine clastic sedimentary rocks with particle sizes less than 0.02 mm (clay to Mittelschluff ). The term can be used irrespective of the material, ie not only to clastic silicate rocks, but also for clastic carbonate rocks.

In the case of a metamorphosis pelites get the prefix meta, they will metapelites as mica schist or phyllite.

In addition to the fine clastic pelitic to medium clastic ( Psammite ) and coarse clastic sediments differs ( Psephite ). However, these three terms are generally used almost exclusively for clastic silicate rocks. While Kalkpelit and very rarely Kalkpsammit are still occasionally found in the literature, Kalkpsephit is completely unusual. In the Karbonatpetrographie the term trio Lutit / arenite / Rudit is used for the description or naming of rocks on grain sizes much more common. Alternatively, the schema pelitic / psammite / Psephit naming siliciclastic sedimentary rocks according to particle size, the terms are applied mudstone / siltstone / sandstone / conglomerate or breccia.
