Bay of Mali Ston between the Peljesac peninsula and the mainland

The Peljesac Bridge ( kroat. Pelješki most) is a planned cable-stayed bridge in southern Croatia, whose construction was stopped in 2012. It is intended to bridge the Bay of Mali Ston and thus connect the Dubrovnik-Neretva county with the rest of Croatia, bypassing the Neum corridor. Travelers passing through on the way to the south must pass through so far in the village of Neum on a few kilometers Bosnian - Herzegovinian territory, which is particularly disadvantageous for transit traffic. In addition to the bridge access to the islands in the south of Croatia can be facilitated, thus enabling an economic upturn in this traffic so far technically relatively remote area.

History

Having started on 24 October 2007 with the construction, the slowly progressing work in 2010 were put on hold due to financial problems. On 17 May 2012, the Social Democratic government then has terminated the contracts with the executive consortium led by the company's constructor Inzenjering, viaduct and under Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic Hidroelektra Niskogradnja. The project was thus stopped for the indefinite future. As a medium-term alternative transit highway to be built through the Neum corridor. According to press releases, which were not yet officially confirmed, the EU will take over the financing of the bridge to 75 percent.

Planning

Technical design

With a central span of 563 meters ( with a total length of 2,374 m), the Peljesac Bridge would be the largest cable-stayed bridge in Croatia on its completion. The reinforced concrete pylons have according to initial plans a height of 240 m and are to be established in 50 to 70 m depth to rock. The superstructure would be 21 meters wide and a maximum of 55 meters would be above the sea level.

Location

The bridge will connect the village Komarna on the mainland with the Peljesac peninsula ( in Brijesta ). The heavily used in the summer months alternative ferry service runs from Ploce to Trpanj on the Peljesac peninsula.

The bridge connection is to contribute to the revitalization of the area of Peljesac and the Neretva area and counteract negative demographic trends. In particular, the population on the islands of Korcula, Lastovo and Mljet, but also the people of Dubrovnik, expected by the construction of the Peljesac Bridge better connections to the mainland and other Croatian cities.

Future

It is unclear whether the bridge will ever be realized. Due to the termination of the contracts for the construction of a realization in the next few years has become very unlikely. But this will also depend on whether the bilateral negotiations between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina on the construction of a transit highway through the Neum corridor successful. In the event of failure or large delays the construction of the Peljesac bridge could still be back to the topic.

Because since joining the EU on 1 July 2013 Croatia needs a solution for the traffic problem because of the Neum corridor, was also in discussion to establish a ferry at the site of the bridge. For the bridge in the meantime decided the reigning Croatian Prime Minister Milanovic. The publication of the EU feasibility study is still pending.
