Peloritani

Dep1f1p5

The Peloritani are a mountain range in northeastern Sicily. They extend along the north coast between Messina and about Tindari. The highest point is Montagna Grande with a height of 1374 m. Particularly striking the Rocca di Novara is at an altitude of 1340 m.

Geology

The Peloritani together with the Nebrodes and the Monti Madonie a continuation of the mountain range of the Apennines. This can be observed particularly in the sequence of geological strata that correspond somewhat staggered in height to those of the Aspromonte, the last spur of the Apennines in Calabria. While the Nebrodes and the Monti Madonie consist of limestone emerge older layers of gneiss, crystalline schists and granite in the Peloritani.

Characteristics

A characteristic feature of the rugged mountain range of Peloritani are wide torrents between the mountains which were formed by the detritus that is mitgespült in heavy rain from the shore on the passing streams. By planting the Peloritani is currently trying to reduce the erosion damage occurring there.
