Penny Wong

Penny Wong (Chinese黄英贤/黄英贤, Pinyin Huang Yingxian; born November 5, 1968 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia) is an Australian politician. She was 2007-2010 Australian Minister for Climate Change and Water and 2010-2013 Minister of Finance and Deregulation. Since 2002, Wong is a member of the Australian Senate. She was the first openly gay and first Asian -born member of the Australian Government Cabinet.

Biography

Wong was born on November 5, 1968 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. At eight years old she moved with her mother and her brother in Australia after her Australian mother had separated from her Malaysian husband. After their further education in Australia Wong studied at the University of Adelaide art and law. During her studies, Wong worked part-time for the union Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union ( CFMEU ). 1988 Wong was a member of the Australian Labor Party. Wong graduated in 1992 at the University and received after employment with the CFMEU. In 2002, she succeeded for the first time into parliament as a Senator for the Australian Labor Party. After the parliamentary elections in Australia in 2007 Wong was appointed Minister for Climate Change and Water shortage in the cabinet of Kevin Rudd.

Wong is regarded as an advocate of the Kyoto Protocol and the Australian government signed this agreement on December 3, 2007.

In the cabinet of Julia Gillard Penny Wong Minister for Finance in 2010 and deregulation in September. In the second cabinet of Kevin Rudd she was still Minister of Finance and in addition the government leader in the Senate.
