Peñón de Alhucemas

Peñón de Alhucemas ( Peñón: Spanish for rock ) is an entity belonging to Spain almost 2 acre island off the coast of North Africa, which is situated 400 meters off the Moroccan Mediterranean coast near the city of Al - Hoceima same name. It is administered directly by the government in Madrid, does not belong to one of Spain's autonomous regions, and hence a Plaza de soberanía. It belongs to the EU and the euro zone.

A similar status, the cities of Ceuta and Melilla and Peñón de Vélez de la regions Gomera, Islas Chafarinas, and Isla del Perejil.

The Peñón de Alhucemas and the nearby islands Isla de Mar and Isla de Tierra are collectively called Alhucemas Islands. 1560 ceded ² large islands during the Turkish wars from regional Sultan of Spain taken together, only 0.06 km. In 1921 there were during the Rifkriegs an attempt to capture by Abd el-Krim. The Peñón de Alhucemas is only used by the military of a small garrison, and otherwise not inhabited. Refugee incident in summer 2012

End of August 2012 reached about 90 refugees from sub-Saharan countries into two groups on only about 100 meters away in front of a Moroccan beach Isla de Tierra. 16 of them ( a woman with child, eleven children and their mothers) were brought by the Spanish authorities to Melilla. The remaining refugees were accommodated in the night of 3 to 4 September 2012 by the Spanish Civil Guard on boats to the opposite beach of the island, where they were taken by Moroccan police and soldiers in reception. Human rights organizations, this approach has been criticized as unlawful.
