Pentanone

The pentanones are a group of three isomeric saturated ketones with five carbon atoms. They have the general molecular formula C5H10O and a molar mass of 86.13 g / mol. They differ in their properties, the melting point of the 3- pentanone in comparison with the other two is considerably higher, because the molecule has a symmetry.

They are available, inter alia by oxidation of the corresponding secondary pentanols (2- pentanol, 3 -pentanol and 3-methyl -2-butanol ). The pentanals have the same molar mass.
