People's Union (Belgium)
The Volksunie ( People's Union ) was a Belgian party. It was founded in 1954 and broke up in 2001 into two factions: the Nieuw- Vlaamse Alliantie and Spirit. Some former VU politicians have made in other parties career, for example, Bart Somers, the chairman of the Flemish Liberals VLD.
The VU was a nationalist and liberal left -oriented party of the Flemish population. 1978 separated the radical nationalists from the VU and later formed the Vlaams Blok (since 2004: Vlaams Belang ).
The N -VA worked from 2003 to 2008 in a cartel with the Christian Democrats together, and were in the elections of 2010, the strongest political force in Belgium. It combines left and right-wing political thought.
In contrast, the Spirit group worked together with the Socialists. They renamed themselves as the party several times and was named to last Sociaal - Liberal Partij. The end of 2009 they broke up in favor of the Greens.
