People's Unity Party – Socialist Party

The United People's Party - Socialist Party (Icelandic Sameiningarflokkur alþýðu - Sósíalistaflokkurinn, often simply called Sósíalistaflokkurinn ) was a left- socialist- communist party in Iceland. It existed from 1938 until 1968.

The party was founded in 1938 by former members of the left wing of the Social Democratic Party of Iceland and the Communist Party of Iceland. From 1956 to the party in the electoral alliance People's Alliance participated (Icelandic Alþýðubandalagið ) of several left-wing parties. In 1968 it was from this alliance a formal party, the Socialist Party so lost their independence and went on in the People's Alliance.

The core of the Socialist Party formed the approximately 1,500 members of the Communist Party of Iceland, which merged in its entirety in it. Because of their good organization, their strong backing in the Icelandic trade union movement as well as the emphasis of an independent national road to socialism, the Socialist Party has been relatively successful in the elections to the Althing. So she won more votes than each of the Social Democratic Party of Iceland (Icelandic Alþýðuflokkurinn ).

The United People's Party - Socialist Party was also involved twice to governments: from 1944 to 1947 under conservative and 1956-1958 under liberal leadership.
