Pepper Coast

Pepper Coast is the historical name of a coastal area in western Africa and includes the coastal states of Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Its name from the coast of Guinea pepper growing there, now known mostly grains of paradise, but also Malagettapfeffer or Meleguetapfeffer - a Ingwerart, which was used in former times in Europe as a substitute for the expensive pepper. Therefore, the coast was also called Malaguettaküste. In English, these grains of paradise also "Grain of Paradise" hence the name Grain Coast for the pepper coast in the English-speaking world as shown on the map opposite will be called. Ivory Coast, the Gold Coast and the Slave Coast Castle At the Pepper Coast in to the European usage of discovery and colonial times. Thus the whole Guinea coast was named after the products that were there of interest to the European traders. A frequently found name for this stretch of coast is also Windwards Coast ( "Coast of headwinds "). This designation was awarded the Coast apparently because of there relatively constant wind conditions.
