Perpetual Edict (1667)

When Eeuwig edict of 1667, is a resolution of the States of Holland, in which this - at the instigation of Johan de Witt, his uncle Andries de Graeff and those powerful ally up - the abolition of the hereditary governorship in Holland decided. The other six provinces of the Republic of the United Netherlands declared out the governorship and the office of Captain-General of the Netherlands to be incompatible.

The drafting of the decree was for the emerging Dutch statesmen Gaspar Fagel and Gillis Valckenier which paradoxically later to powerful partisans of the 1672 governor appointed William III. were of Orange- Nassau. The leading party of the Dutch city regent was introduced to ensure that the first governor Loose period would last forever and thereby the Orange governors and their political system would have been used forever. The Dutch leadership succeeded with this decree securing their oligarchic power.

In 1672, the Rampjaar in which the Orangemen again came to power after the violent murder of the brothers Johan and Cornelis de Witt, the Eeuwig edict was by the Dutch States General withdrawn under pressure violence.
