Persis Drell

Persis S. Drell ( born 1955 ) is an American physicist, 2007-2012 Director of the SLAC.

Drell is the daughter of Sidney Drell. She studied at Wellesley College (Bachelor 1977) and received his doctorate in 1983 at the University of California, Berkeley in atomic physics. Then she moved to high-energy physics, and went in 1983 to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. From 1988, she was Assistant Professor at Cornell University, where she was an Associate Professor in 1993 and Professor in 1998, and the group headed for High Energy Physics since 2000. In 2001, she was there, Deputy Director of the Laboratory of Nuclear Physics. In 2002 she was research director and professor at SLAC, 2005 Deputy Director ( and Director of particle physics and particle astrophysics ) and 2007 director.

From 2004 to 2005 she was project manager of the Gamma Ray Large Area Space Telescope.

She was Guggenheim Fellow (1998) and received from 1988 to 1993 the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award. In 2010 she became a member of the National Academy of Sciences. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. In 2006, she was Loeb Lecturer at Harvard University.
