Pertactin

Pertactin is a protein which is located in Bordetella bacteria in the outer cell membrane. It is used for adhesion (adhesion) to host cells (called an adhesin ). Pertactin is a human immunogen and antibodies to pertactin in animal models show a protective effect against Bordetella infections. The advantages over established pertussis vaccination is however in doubt.

The pertactin precursor comprises a β - barrel domain, which is separated off after transport into the periplasm of peptidases and possibly forms a porin in the outer bacterial membrane, through which the separated pertactin part is transported to the outside. Pertactin itself is also almost entirely of β -sheets, which together form the largest known β - helix.
