Petar Konjović

Petar Konjović ( Serbian Cyrillic Петар Коњовић, born May 5, 1883 in Čurug; † October 1, 1970 in Belgrade ) was a Yugoslavian composer, music educator and scientist.

Konjović studied in Prague at Vítězslav Novák. He was choir director, teacher, and from 1921 to 1926 director of the opera in Belgrade. He then headed the theater of Osijek, Split and Novi Sad from 1933 to 1939 the National Theatre in Zagreb. Until 1950, he taught at the Academy of Music in Belgrade; besides, he was 1948-1955 Director of the Belgrade Institute of Musicology.

He composed six operas, a symphony, a symphonic poem, a symphonic triptych, Symphonic Variations, Three Psalms for String Orchestra, a violin concerto, chamber music, piano works, Yugoslav folksong arrangements and song cycles.

Since 1991, the Society of Music and Ballet pedagogues organized the International Competition for Young Musicians Petar Konjović.
