Petar Mladenov

Petar Mladenov Toschew ( Bulg Петър Тошев Младенов ) ( born August 22, 1936 in Toschewtschi in the Vidin Province; † 31 May 2000) was a Bulgarian diplomat and politician.

Mladenov was born into a peasant family in the village of Toschewtschi in the Vidin Province. His father was an anti-fascist partisan who fell in 1944. After completion of the Military Academy Mladenov went to the University of Sofia and graduated in 1963 at the State Institute of International Relations in Moscow. In 1971 he was appointed by Todor Zhivkov as foreign minister; He held this position for almost two decades. After the fall of Zhivkov in 1989, he took over both the post of General Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party, as well as the Office of the Council of State. Both offices were abolished in April 1990, whereupon Mladenov appointed president.
