Peter J. Gomes

Peter John Gomes ( May 22nd, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts, † 28 February 2011) was an American theologian, university professor at Harvard Divinity School of Harvard University, and author.

Career

Gomes graduated in 1965 at Bates College and in 1968 from Harvard Divinity School. He worked at the University of Cambridge and most recently at Emmanuel College, where the " Gomes Lectureship " was set up for him.

As a Baptist preacher Gomes was ordained in the First Baptist Church of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Gomes was a recognized expert in early American religions. Since 1970 he worked in the Memorial Church of Harvard University. Gomes was also a trustee of Bates College. He was considered an excellent clergyman and held sermons in both the United States and the United Kingdom. In 1998 he was elected to the Clergy of the Year of Religion and American Life. Gomes has published several books. Among other things, he wrote the works of The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart and Sermons, and The Book of Wisdom for Daily Living, published in Publisher William Morrow & Company. In addition, Gomes wrote several articles and works with ten sermons.

1991 Gomes surprised many people when he'd be coming out. Since that time he has been an advocate for greater acceptance of homosexuality in American society. Gomes explained that he lived celibate. Throughout his life Gomes was politically a member of the Republican and supported the Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. In August 2006, however, he joined the party and became a member of the Democrats to support their candidates Deval Patrick, the first African-American governor in Massachusetts was in this year.
