Peter Knight (scientist)

Sir Peter L. Knight FRS, ( born August 12, 1947) is a British theoretical physicist who deals with quantum optics, atomic physics and quantum computer science.

Knight received his doctorate at Sussex University and was a post-doctoral researcher from 1972 to 1974 with Joseph H. Eberly at the University of Rochester and at SLAC. In 1976 he was at Johns Hopkins University and then at the Royal Holloway College, University of London and from 1979 at Imperial College. In 1983 he was a lecturer there in 1987 and 1988 Reader professor. 2001 to 2005 he was standing in front of the physics faculty. By 2008 he was Dean ( Principal ) of the Faculty of Science at Imperial College and by 2010 Vice Rector in charge of research. He has been a visiting professor in Rochester, at the University of Konstanz ( as a Humboldt Research Professor ) and the University of Louvain- la -Neuve. Since 2010 he is a director (principal) of the Kavli Royal Society International Centre in Chichely Hall.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, whose advice he served from 2005 to 2007, the Institute of Physics (IOP ) and the Optical Society of America. Knight received the Thomas Young Medal and the Glazebrook Medal of the IOP, the Royal Medal of the Royal Society (2010) and the Frederic Ives Medal ( 2008), the Optical Society of America, which he was president in 2003. In 1996 he received the Einstein Award for laser research. In 1996 he was Wood Memorial Lecturer.

By 2010 he was head of the scientific advisory body to the UK Ministry of Defence and is also a government advisor in the UK. Until 2005 he was Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK National Physical Laboratory. He was knighted in 2005.

In 2011 he became president of the Institute of Physics.

1987 to 2005 he was editor of the Journal of Modern Optics.

He stood before the Section Optics and Quantum Electronics of the European Physical Society.
