The English University of Sussex was founded in 1961 as the first of many new universities in the 1960s. Its campus is located in a nature reserve near the village of Falmer East Sussex.

The university was selected by the Times Higher Education ranked 8 of the best universities in England. Internationally Sussex was named one of the THE World University Ranking with 16th in Europe and 79th place in the world of the most prestigious universities.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a black university ( heraldic ) dolphin which is borrowed from the coat of arms of the city of Brighton and the black Celtic crowns from the coat of arms of East and West Sussex. On the rafters the golden birds on a blue background representing East Sussex and West Sussex on a red background.

The crest consists of two black dolphins, surrounded by a gold Celtic crown.

The plate holder are two pelicans. It was formerly believed that pelicans with their beaks tear open their breast to feed her young with her own blood. Therefore, the pelican is still the symbol of service and sacrifice.

The motto of the university is " Be still and know", thus: "Remain still and know " or " Be still and know " The motto is a quote from Psalm 46:10 " Be still and not know that I am God"..

Campus and Student Life

The University of Sussex is a classic campus university. All teaching and research facilities are located together with the library, two sports halls, student apartments, shops, bars and a club ( Hot House ) on the same site. The campus is located on the edge of the South Downs and is the only of England, which is located completely in a kind of nature reserve ( Area of ​​Outstanding Natural Beauty ).
