Ian McEwan

Ian Russell McEwan CBE, FRSA ( born June 21, 1948 in Aldershot, England ) is a British writer.

Life

Ian McEwan is the son of a professional soldier ( Aldershot is a military base ) and grew as a result of the dislocations of his father including Singapore and Libya. He studied English and French Philology at the University of Sussex in Brighton, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature. During his subsequent studies to obtain the Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of East Anglia in Norwich Ian McEwan took a course in creative writing at the novelists Malcolm Bradbury and Angus Wilson. Later he taught himself at the University of Sussex. Since the success of the collection of short stories First Love, Last Rites (1975 ), he works as a freelance writer. Throughout his career, McEwan was honored with almost all major awards for English-language literature.

Ian McEwan is married in second marriage to journalist Annalena McAfee and lives in London. With his first wife, Penny Allen, he has two sons.

In 2000 he was appointed by the British Queen Elizabeth II as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

2002 McEwan learned that he has a biological brother. He comes from an extramarital affair of his mother during the Second World War, which gave away him before return of her husband. After her husband had fallen, the mother married three years later their former lovers; Ian was born six years after his brother. Only after her death, the sister of McEwan's mother revealed the family secret.

2007 McEwan's novel Atonement was filmed by British director Joe Wright. In the same film production Keira Knightley and James McAvoy play the lead roles.
