Christian Enzensberger

Christian Enzensberger ( born December 24, 1931 in Nuremberg, † January 27, 2009 in Munich) was a German Anglist, translator and writer.

Life and work

Christian Enzensberger, since 1957 assistant of the Munich Anglisten Wolfgang Clemen, received his doctorate in 1962 and his habilitation in 1969 with his work on the Victorian poetry. Then he was up to his retirement in 1994 Professor of English literary history at the Institute of English Philology at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich.

In addition to his teaching and research activities Enzensberger translated numerous works, especially from the Anglo- Saxon world. Especially his translations of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass in 1963 made ​​the two books in German-speaking popular. As an example of originality and outstanding quality of its adaptations is called the Looking Glass Carroll's poem Jabberwocky from Alice here.

Christian Enzensberger was a younger brother of Hans Magnus Enzensberger and lived in Munich.

Greater Essay on the dirt

Enzensberger's 1968 essay published Greater Essay on the dirt attracted public attention. He was reviewed in national newspapers and learned within a year three editions. 1975 and 1980 published two bibliophile portfolios with etchings by Thomas waste stream and Klaus Fußmann. Enzensberger 1970 refused to accept the right conferred on him for this Bremen Literature Prize.
