History

The Foundation has been controversial for a long time because of the difficult classifiable ratio of founder Alfred Toepfer to National Socialism. So it was in the early 1990s in Vienna to violent attacks by the research group cultural history against the newly established Grillparzer Prize (which was discontinued after three awards ) and the continuity of Herder prices. In 1996, the 1962 Strasbourg - created price had to be adjusted for contributions to Franco-German understanding due to ongoing protests against the founder. This took the Foundation in 1997 as an opportunity to be examined the work of the Foundation and the founder of an independent commission. The presented on 11 December 2000 results were firstly found that Toepfer " never the central goals and motives of the leading Nazis " informed, " racism and anti-Semitism were far from him " ( Mommsen, Circle et al. ). On the other hand showed his work by awarding cultural prizes to a close proximity to Nazi Volkstumspolitik to their party officials he was in contact. In the diaries of Joseph Goebbels a friendly encounter is noted. Also a personal continuity in the foundation boards of the period of National Socialism until the recent past, the Commission noted and criticized avoiding " self-critical (r ) past analyzes " of the founder himself, however, attested to him learning and a move away from extreme nationalism. (Lit.: Circle et al. )

Nevertheless, this work-up did not prevent the ratio of Alfred Toepfer was afterwards still made to National Socialism of the Foundation for reproach. In 2005, refused the French theater director Ariane Mnouchkine acceptance of the Hanseatic Goethe Prize. 2010 called for the British historian Michael Pinto - Duschinsky setting the Hanseatic Scholars chips at the University of Oxford. Following the resignation of Birte Toepfer as the last family members of the founder (she was the daughter of Alfred Toepfer ) from the Board directed the Foundation in 2004, a restructuring of the Foundation's program. One of the goals is to streamline the number of prizes and scholarships, which had evolved over time, and the means to convert it into an operational program was. This process was completed in 2007.

" The history of the FVS Foundation and biographical stations of the founder Alfred Toepfer remain the subject of scientific studies and critical support of the Foundation's activities. " Publications and debates will constantly update and publish the Foundation.
