Peter Martyr d'Anghiera

Peter Martyr of Anglería ( Anglerius ) (* February 2, 1457 in Arona on Lake Maggiore, † 1526 in Granada ) was a historian.

He comes from a business established in Angera Gender and went after he had acquired in Rome Education and patrons in 1487 to the Spanish court, where he soon won the favor of Ferdinand and Isabella.

1492 he took holy orders and was canon in Granada, soon after, he was entrusted with the supervision of a court school for the young grandees and appointed royal chaplain.

1501 he traveled as a Spanish ambassador over Venice to Alexandria to the court of the Sultan of Egypt. He was prior of the cathedral chapter in Granada, papal prothonotary, a member of the high council of India, finally designated Bishop of Jamaica and died about 1526 in Granada.

  • De Orbe Novo Decades: Comprehensive description of the discovery of America by the Spaniards. The first decade was already printed without Martyrs agreement in 1511 in Seville, the first authorized version, however, was not published until 1516 in Alcalá. An early Italian translation of the first three decades Lessona already appeared in 1504 under the title Libretto de tutta la navigatione de Re de Spagna de le Isole et terreni novamente trovati at Albertino as in Venice, she also went into the of Fracanzano because Montalboddo and published in Paesi novamente retrovati (Vicenza, 1507) a.
