Peter Weish

Peter Wis ( born November 29, 1936 in Vienna) is an Austrian scientist (biology, chemistry and physics ), author and environmental activist.

Life

Peter Wis studied biology, chemistry and physics at the University of Vienna. After his doctorate in philosophy in 1966, he was up in 1970 as a fellow at the Institute for Radiation Protection in the reactor center in Seibersdorf active. Then Wis worked for four years as an assistant at the Institute of Zoology at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Vienna.

In 1969 his critical examination of the health and social aspects of nuclear energy. It was followed by numerous publications on this subject, including the scientific Paperback " Radioactivity and the Environment" in G. Fischer Verlag, Stuttgart and contribution " radioactivity as a disease factor " under the " System analysis of health care in Austria ."

In 1974, Peter worked Wis ( until 1978 the Ludwig Boltzmann Society assigned later the Austrian Academy of Sciences) as a research officer at the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Conservation. The focus of his activities was mainly in the fields of urban ecology, energy policy and risk management. Together with Univ. Dr. Bernd solder took Wis a pioneering role in the development of scientific bases for urban planning decisions in Vienna (eg network of cycle paths, green belts, unleaded gasoline). He was also a member of the Environmental Advisory Board of the City of Vienna.

In 1984, Peter Wis Lecturer in Human Ecology at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Vienna. Eight years later, he completed his habilitation with the thesis " Contribution of human ecology to technology assessment using the example of nuclear energy " for the subject of human ecology at the University of Vienna. He received teaching activities in the fields of Human Ecology and Environmental Ethics at the University of Vienna, Vienna University of Economics and the University of Agricultural Sciences, Vienna.

In addition to its commitment to the nuclear industry ( both in Austria and abroad ) to Wis dealt with questions from the areas of environmental protection, environmental education, conservation and development cooperation. The work was done on the one hand on a scientific, on the other hand, at the social level as part of the " ecology movement ". In 1997, he became the spokesman for the Mitproponent and genetic engineering referendum.

As part of its commitment to environmental protection, Dr. Peter Wis was active in numerous organizations and committees:

  • Forum on Science and the Environment ( Founder and Chairman )
  • Anti-nuclear International ( Chairman)
  • Ökobüro (Chairman )
  • Austrian Society for Nature Conservation
  • WWF
  • ÖGUT
  • National Park Institute
  • Forum for Nuclear Affairs ( advisory body to the Ministry responsible for nuclear matters )
  • Genetic Engineering Commission (until 1999)
  • Environmental working group of the Commissariat of the German Bishops

Since 1997 Peter Wis. official is retired. As a university teacher as well as in the field of environmental protection organizations, he is still active.
