Peter Westmacott

Sir Peter Westmacott KCMG John, LVO (* December 1950 ) is a British diplomat.

Career

He entered the diplomatic service in 1972 and his first overseas deployment was as a second secretary in Tehran, Iran in 1974. 1978, he was ambassador to the European Commission and from 1980 to 1984 he was in Paris. After a period in London, he was from 1987 "Head of Chancery " in Ankara. In 1990 he was "Deputy Private Secretary " at the Prince of Wales, and he was sent to Washington as Counsellor in 1993. Subsequent posts included "Director for the Americas in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office" and " Deputy Under Secretary of State".

He was from 2002 to 2006 the British ambassador to Turkey, then ambassador to France. Since January 2012, he serves as Ambassador to the United States of America. Sir Peter was awarded the Royal Victorian Order in 1993, and was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 2003.
