Peter Wittig

Peter Wittig ( born August 11, 1954) is a German diplomat and since 2009 Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations in New York City. 2014 he moved to the German Embassy in Washington.

Biography

After school he studied history, political science and law at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, Albert- Ludwigs- University of Freiburg, the University of Canterbury and the University of Oxford. After graduating, he graduated in 1982 with a thesis entitled The English road to socialism: the Fabians and their significance for the Labour Party and British politics. Wittig was between 1979 and 1982 Assistant Professor at the Albert- Ludwigs- University of Freiburg and author of articles on the topics of the history of ideas and foreign policy.

In 1982 he entered the diplomatic service and found after the completion of the preparatory service uses at the Embassy in Madrid and the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City. Subsequently, he was personal assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In 1997 he was appointed ambassador in Lebanon and then in 1999 in Cyprus. During this time he was also commissioner of the Federal Government for the Cyprus conflict. He was replaced as ambassador in Nicosia Jochen Trebesch 2002 and first Ambassador and Deputy Head of the United Nations and Global Issues. Subsequently, he was in 2006 as the successor of Hans -Joachim Daerr even Head of GF (Global Issues, United Nations, Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid ) of the Foreign Office.

In December 2009 he was appointed as the successor of Thomas Matussek as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York City. In July 2011 he was in rotation Chairman of the UN Security Council.
