Petrocephalus

Petrocephalus bane

Petrocephalus is an African freshwater fish species from the family of mormyrids ( Mormyridae ). In German, they are called because of their blunt snouts Boxernilhechte.

Features

Petrocephalus species are 5.2 to 20 inches long. Your body is relatively short, high backs and sides flattened. The caudal peduncle is narrow, the tail fin is always forked.

In contrast to other Nilhechtgattungen they have a basisphenoid ( sphenoid ). The first two rays of the dorsal fin are unsegmented ( in the other genera, only the first one), all further segmented. The nostrils are close together and are located below or only slightly in front of the anterior margin. The mouth is more or less constantly and is under or slightly in front of the anterior margin of the eyes. Dorsal fin and anal fin sit far back on the body and are located approximately opposite symmetrical.

Like all mormyrids Petrocephalus has the ability to electrical orientation and communication.

System

Petrocephalus is basal to all other Nilhechtgattungen and is therefore classified in its own subfamily, the Petrocephalinae, while all other Nilhechtgattungen form the subfamily Mormyrinae.
