Petroecuador

Petroecuador ( Empresa Estatal Petróleos del Ecuador = " State Oil Company of Ecuador " ) is an Ecuadorian state-owned company, which was founded on 26 September 1989 and is in charge of the exploitation of petroleum and natural gas reserves. The State assumes the exploration and exploitation of deposits in the territory and the associated waters directly by Petroecuador or through contracts with third parties.

Petroecuador is the successor organization to the CEPE ( Corporación Estatal Petrolera Ecuatoriana = "State Ecuadorian petroleum corporation " ), with its founding on June 23, 1972, the state took over all activities that have to do with the research, the promotion and sale of oil and natural gas. Here also, the company Anglo - Ecuadorian Oilfields was swallowed, which operated a refinery in La Libertad ( Province of Santa Elena ) and near the town of Ancon promoted crude oil.

Petroecuador is composed of three sub-companies with various tasks:

  • Petroproducción: exploration and production of oil and natural gas reserves
  • Petro Industrial: oil refining
  • Petro Comercial: transportation and marketing of refined products on the domestic market

The company is the management and use of transequadorianischen pipeline network SOTE entrusted (built in 1972 by Texaco - Gulf).

Refineries

Petroecuador has three oil refineries in Ecuador:

  • Esmeraldas, 110,000 bbl. / Day
  • La Libertad, 45,000 bbl. / Day ( = 7,200 m³ / day)
  • Shushufindi, 20,000 bbl. / Day ( = 3,200 m³ / day)

The capacity is expected to increase as a result of the growing demand in Ecuador and the United States. (Ecuador is the second largest South American exporter of petroleum products in the United States).

Criticism

Petroecuador was at the center of controversy over the influence of prospecting and pipeline operations on the environment and the indigenous people ( Huaorani and Cofan ) in the Amazon basin in eastern Ecuador, where drilling takes place in former street free rainforest. Interest groups like Amazon Watch and ChevronToxico have tried to document the oil pollution, environmental damage and impacts on humans.

In response to these reports filed a class action lawsuit against ChevronTexaco for involvement in these operations in the United States. A court ruled that the case should be heard in Ecuador. 2003, a new lawsuit was filed in Ecuador, which is currently before the Ecuadorian courts. In March 2007, Chevron said, not wanting to settle the dispute by comparison.
